Embedding video clip is easy like never before in PowerPoint’s latest avatar, the soon-to-come 2010 edition. There are quite a few articles in this blog on the subject.
One aspect relating to the embedding of video in PowerPoint 2010 has been that unlike audio, the video cannot be made to play across several slides. That clearly looks like a disadvantage on the surface. Scratch a little deep and you may find some workaround as I attempt to show in the video below.
The basic premise lies in the logic that if you don’t want an embedded video in PowerPoint to run its full course, simply break it to as many clips as necessary. Each clip will then play one after another as you arrange them.
What is commendable is that you can arrange to play as many video clips you want in a single slide. Since the videos will be made to start automatically, they will seamlessly play one after another as if they are not separate at all.
Take a look at the video.
Advantages Of Small Video Clips
For me, the main advantage of embedding smaller video clips in PowerPoint is that I can push in one or more slides between the videos if necessary.
One may give many reasons for doing that. An example is a marketing presentation, wherein the video inputs are interspersed with static or dynamic slides on relevant field data.
Similarly, a scientific presentation that involves both data support and video explanation may need breaking up videos to smaller clips before they are embedded in PowerPoint.
If done well, video-supported PowerPoint slide-shows can be quite convincing to the viewers when presented in person. The same goes for PowerPoint to video when the latter is embedded in a web page for online viewing.
Are there other ways of doing this work? We’ll look into it in one of the forthcoming articles.

After reading this article, I wonder if 2010 allows 2 movies on the same slide playing simultaneously; one full screen playing in the background, one smaller playing in the foreground. Do you know if it can?
Here are my slide design criteria. I need to have a single slide show with a movie that takes up the full size of the slide. It will start automatically and loop continuous when the slide is reached in slide show mode. These I know how to set up easily in PP 2007 (version I have).
Here’s the tough part. I need to have additional movies appear on top of the large background movie, and start only when clicked. These smaller sized movies would be invisible till clicked; they are zoomed in versions of certain areas of the larger background. I think of them as Hotspots.
Once the Hotspot movie is done playing, I need it to become invisible again. I will need to have 6-8 of these Hotspots; they will not overlap each other, but certainly will lay on top of the larger background movie.
1.What’s the best way to insert these Hotspot movies?
2.How can I get them to be invisible before and after play?
3.Can I make them available if the presenter wanted to show the hotspot movie more than once?
4.How can I make them use the Power Point movie player only and not launch Windows Media player for the second, simultaneously playing movie?
5. How can I keep the background movie playing behind the hotspot plying in the foreground?
I have started to play around with this without sucess. Any ideas would be most helpful.
The goal is to keep the audience focused on the single slide and view these zoomed-in, closeup movies as the presenter chooses during the presentation.
I have tried inserting the zoomed in movie as a custom action button that hyperlinks to the movie. But, the background movie always jumps to the front, even though I have defined it go to back.
I inserted the larger background movie on the master slide, to force it to the background. It still jumps to the front in slideshow mode. I have also been messing around with triggers, adding action to buttons, and custom animation. I cannot find the desired solution.
Any feedback would be great
@philomena,
It is possible to play 2 movies on the same slide in PowerPoint 2010. What you mention is something I feel can be done in PowerPoint 2010. I haven’t tried though, but I’ll surely attempt doing when time permits.
Thanks for raising the point!
