The greatest show on the earth starts tomorrow. It’s a spectacle, comparable with only the Olympics in terms of popularity, but putting the latter at a distant second in global appeal.

World Cup 2010 is special because it is for the first time in its history that the African continent is going to host it. I’ve been to South Africa 2 years back, and I can vouch for the appeal of the country and its people to be the perfect host for this grand spectacle.

All the TV channels are agog with something or other about the World Cup, and the lowly, 133rd ranked (as of May 2010) India is no exception. The excitement is palpable in Kolkata, said to be the ‘soccer’ capital of the country, even though all the football playing clubs have been relegated to mediocrity in the just-concluded national league championship.

Coming back to South Africa, the center of all riveting attentions, a Google-made video showing all the 10 stadiums is produced below. What is amazing in the video is that all the stadiums and their surroundings are modeled in 3D, and made live in Google Earth and Earth view in Google Maps. This is followed by a second video, a cute TV commercial by Pepsi showing the revered strikers, Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Kaka (Brazil), and Lionel Messi (Argentina).

ENJOY!
