And What Is Google Wave?

Comments §

On May 28 last Google announced the launch of Wave, rather Google Wave by their Sydney-based engineers.

As is the case with anything Google, the launch of Wave immediately sent a wave of excitement through the web, and rightly so as experts pointed out later.

There are many explanations of Wave, one of which is from in the video below.

Since the product is not yet in public domain – it is going to come later this year – all talks are just that…guess-works.

Let us see what Google says about Wave.

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

In the introductory video shown by the Google engineers, what comes very clear is that the way we communicate (on the web?) is going to change dramatically. How that will be is anyone’s guess, but since Google Wave uses an open protocol…so anyone can build their own wave system.

That indeed is the biggest point to note… anyone can build their own wave system. Needless to say, the best minds and expertise are going to converge on Google Wave.

Which only means that the excitement for communicating is not likely to cease anytime soon!
