Zoom & Pan Of Still Image For Ken Burns Effect Using Vegas Movie Studio

Ken Burns Effect refers to the technique of pan and scan effect rendered to still imagery in video production. Many software for online video make it possible to create smooth Ken Burns effect with sufficient ease. The video below demonstrates how to zoom and pan still image with Vegas Movie Studio. I’ve used the image of painting from this Wikipedia page (depicting the Battle of Gettysburg, authored by Urpo Lankinen).

 

 

 

Doing It With Vegas Movie Studio

The still image has dimensions 640×480 pixels. So, for a good video, its dimensions or resolution should also be the same as the image that is 640×480 pixels.

To start with, bring the image on to the timeline in Vegas Movie Studio. See the picture below where the important parameters of using the software are shown. The length of the video is a little short of 23 seconds.

The following are the steps to do the zoom and pan of still image for making video:

  • Clicking on the small icon, called the Event Pan/Crop, opens up a new separate window with its own timeline.
  •  

  • The image displayed on the right has 8 handlers that can be dragged in to narrow down the focus on particular spots.
  •  

  • On the left panel are the figures that give the overall view area of the picture for a given position of the handlers, and also the deviation of the center of the focus area from the X & Y ends of the total picture.
  •  

  • As the handlers are dragged in, the focus area of the picture can also be shifted from one position to another.
  •  

  • On the timeline below you can insert key frames for every position of the focus area denoted by the handlers. I’ve inserted a total of 11 key frames for the above video.
  •  

  • The key frames mark the beginning and the end of 6 focus areas on the picture. Out of these, the first and the last represent the whole picture, while there are 4 different focus areas in between.
  •  

  • Clicking on each key frame reveals the position of the focus area for that frame.
  •  

  • Once the work is done, dismiss the Event Pan/Crop window, and click the start button to play the video.
